Thor Halvorssen is a Venezuelan filmmaker. He is also a revered human rights activist. Halvorssen has significantly contributed to the fields of pro-democracy advocacy, public interest advocacy, civil liberties, and public policy. He serves as the president of the Human Rights Foundation. This organization is committed to advocating for human rights and liberties across the world.

Additionally, Halvorssen is the patron of Children’s Peace Movement that is based in the Czech Republic, and On Own Feet. He is the Moving Picture Institute’s founder. Halvorssen is also the founder of Oslo Freedom Foundation. The entity organizes yearly gatherings of human rights activists and foundations. The Economist has described the event as a spectacular human rights festival.

Halvorssen was born to an influential family in Venezuela. He is a relative of the country‘s first president, Christobal Mendoza. His father, Thor Halvorssen Hellum worked as Venezuela’s ambassador for anti-narcotic affairs under Carlos Andres Perez’s administration. He also served as a Venezuelan Senate Commission’s special overseas investigator.

Thor is a graduate of concurrent degrees in political science and history from the University of Pennsylvania. Halvorssen graduated Phi Beta Kappa as well as magna cum laude. He has authored many publications in leading newspapers and magazines such as Time Magazine, National Journal, and The Nation. He has also written articles for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.

Thor was the executive producer of Hammer & Tickle, which is a film about humor and ridicule. It shows disconnect between reality and propaganda. Halvorssen’s film was awarded the Best New Documentary Film during the Zurich Film Festival.
